In the beginning of 2015, Condé Nast Entertainment decided that having an iOS native app would be beneficial for its digital video platform, The Scene. We had already put The Scene on connected devices like AppleTV, Xbox One and Roku, so we felt that a native mobile app was the natural next step for us. We wanted the app to have at least the same basic structure of the desktop experience, i.e. the ability to browse by channel and category. At the time of project kick-off, we knew that we had a very short amount of time to build this, so we really needed to keep feature sets to a minimum. At the very least, we knew from user interviews that at least a basic level of personalization would be useful for them. For the MVP, we decided to personalize on the channel level and build our category-level personalization in the next iteration.
